Jenna Turns Two!

“You can’t enter LolaLand without a passport and sunglasses,” so for Jenna’s Charlie-and-Lola-themed birthday party, we turned our home into JennaLand, giving each child sunglasses and a personalized passport as they arrived. JennaLand was a very fun place, with many balloons, pink cupcakes and, of course, Green Drops from Greenland.

Hi Lindsey. Thank you! I was really happy with how it turned out and everyone seemed to have a great time. The “decorate Lola’s dress” activity was definitely everyone’s favorite. I’m working on a few how-to’s and templates. Here a post with the ones I’ve finished so far.

I used the label below and glued it to a 1 quart bottle of Promised Land Strawberry Milk. The Promised Land Strawberry Milk wasn’t pink, surprisingly, so I added a two drops of food coloring.

I printed the label on white cardstock and cut it to approx 6″ (wide) x 4″(tall) (which left the back nutritional info exposed).
I’m going to write a post about the Charlie and Lola poster-sized “photo opportunities” soon, but essentially, I painted a 6′ x 4′ trifold presentation board (purchased at Hobby Lobby) to look like a wall background (dark brown “wood” floor and pink painted walls). The trifold format allowed the pictures to stand up on their own so that the children could stand behind them. In Photoshop, I sized the characters to scale to the presentation board (making Charlie about 3 1/3 ft tall and Lola 2 1/2 ft tall). Because I didn’t think I could get copyrighted material printed locally, I chopped the images into smaller 8 x 10 images that I could print on my home printer. I printed the individual images onto cardstock, cut them out and then reassembled them on the presentation board. I tried to divide the images in ways that would make the lines less obvious – I printed the arms on one page, her dress on another, etc. This is tedious, I know, and I was skeptical of the results I would get, but it ended up working really well. I used an exacto knife to cut out the faces so that the children could have their pictures taken “as” Charlie and Lola. Here’s how it looked at the party:

OMG, I am totally in love with this party!! I am planning one for my ‘almost’ two year olds birthday and got some wonderful ideas from you!
What did you use as a photo to get Charlie and Lola as big as a standup?? Did you scan something or find it on the net?? I’m having a hard time finding a photo of Lola on the web thats a decent size for an invitation.

I had to scan images from a book. I think I scanned them in at 350 dpi and then sized them slightly under life-sized since most of the children attending our party were 2 to 5 years and I wanted them to be able to reach the holes.

Love the green drops-are they m&ms? If so where did you find a bag of green only? My daughters 4th bday is this weekend and we are going Charlie and Lola style!

Oh, if only they had been M&Ms! They were peas. My daughter actually loves peas so we included them in the menu. I think she was the only one who ate them. The other children would definitely have preferred M&Ms. If you’re looking for single colors, I’ve seen them at Party City (a chain party store) and at Walmart (usually near the seasonal stuff). Best wishes on your C&L party this weekend and happy birthday to your daughter!

Organising a Charlie and Lola birthday party for my daughter and absolutely love your ideas, they are fabulous!
Can I ask, I’m looking at the photograph of the food you served and I know tomatoes are ‘moon squirters’ and carrots are ‘orange twiglets from jupiter’ but what other ‘names’ did you give the food? You have cheese, a fruit salad and crisps etc

Hi Lyndsay,
We also served ‘Greendrops from Greenland’ (peas) and ‘Crisps’ (potato chips). The remainder of the food didn’t have Charlie and Lola – ish names. The cheese plate featured a selection of cheeses from England, and we just labelled them according to their actual names. Hope that helps. Best wishes on your party!
